Introduction
Welcome back to Homegrown Country, where we share our latest adventures and projects. In this article, we'll take a closer look at what's been happening in the workshop lately. From custom display cases to setting up an Etsy store, we've been keeping busy with various endeavors. But before we dive into the details, let's catch up on what's been going on.
Recent Projects in the Workshop
It's been a while since we've shared a video, so we wanted to bring you along on our latest workshop projects. There have been a few different things going on, including setting up at a flea market and working on some leather projects. One highlight has been the custom display cases we've been building. A gentleman at the flea market requested a couple of cases, and we ended up making three in total. Another lady at the market noticed our work and asked if we could create a display case for her hair products and other items she sells. We'll show you the finished result later on.
Custom Display Cases
For the custom display cases, we used Spruce to create the main structure and Cedar for the backside. The process involved ripping the wood down to about 4 inches and then assembling the pieces accordingly. After several coats of polyurethane, the cases were finally complete. We believe our customers will be pleased with the final product, and we'll be sure to send them some pictures once everything has dried completely.
Pros:
- Customizable to meet specific needs
- Showcases products effectively
- Handcrafted with attention to detail
Cons:
- Time-consuming to build
- Requires materials and tools
- May be expensive for some budgets
Setting Up an Etsy Store
In addition to our workshop projects, we recently opened an Etsy store called JW Scot Leather. This online platform allows us to showcase and sell our leather work to a broader audience. Currently, our store features various leather products we've created, and we plan to expand our offerings in the future. Eventually, we hope to have our standalone website, but for now, Etsy provides a good starting point. If you're interested, you can check out JW Scot Leather at jwscotleather.etsy.com.
Long-Term Goals
While leatherwork is a passion of ours, it's not the end goal. We envision a future where we're making knives, diving into blacksmithing, and exploring new creative avenues. Having our standalone website is the ultimate objective, as it would give us more control and flexibility. However, for now, we're focused on honing our craft and building our presence on Etsy.
Trying New Things
One thing we've realized is the importance of trying new things. Life is too short to limit ourselves to a single path or career. By embracing new experiences and challenges, we expand our horizons and discover hidden talents and interests. This mindset has guided our journey in woodworking, leatherworking, and beyond.
The Importance of Enjoyment
We value the freedom and opportunity that working on our own projects brings. While we could pursue more traditional 40-hour jobs and make more money, we prioritize the ability to be present for our family, pursue our passions, and enjoy the simple things in life. Money is not the driving force for us; instead, it's the fulfillment and contentment that come from doing what we love.
Balancing Work and Personal Life
Although there are many advantages to being self-employed, there are also challenges. One such challenge is finding a balance between personal life and work. Multitasking is possible, but we prefer to remain focused on one project at a time to ensure we don't neglect other important aspects of our lives. It's all about staying organized and prioritizing our commitments.
The Value of Contentment
In the end, the key to happiness and fulfillment is contentment. We have learned to appreciate the journey rather than solely focusing on the destination. Life is not about achieving every goal or making tons of money; it's about finding joy in the process and being true to ourselves. Failure is not something we fear; instead, it's an opportunity to learn and grow.
Conclusion
As we wrap up this article, we hope we've inspired you to pursue your passions and try new things. Life is too short to settle for mediocrity or to live with regret. Take the leap, step out of your comfort zone, and see where your journey takes you. Remember, it's not about the destination, but the experiences and personal growth along the way. Embrace the uncertainty and enjoy the ride.
