Discovering a Creative Outlet During Quarantine

Quarantine has brought its fair share of sadness and boredom, but it has also allowed many people, myself included, to indulge in their interests and hobbies. As an introvert, being at home has given me the time and space to explore different creative pursuits.

Exploring the World of Arts and Crafts

One of my favorite pastimes is watching YouTube videos, and I often found myself daydreaming about having my own channel. However, I was hesitant to start one, as I felt that nobody had asked for it. But then, something changed.

The Journey to Opening an Etsy Shop

It all began when I stumbled upon a photo on Pinterest—a painting of a toad who was also a wizard. Instantly, I fell in love with the picture and felt a deep connection to it. I decided to bring this toad, whom I named Trevor, to life using clay sculpture.

Overcoming Self-Doubt

As someone who had never sold any of my creations before, I struggled with self-doubt. I believed that my work was not good enough to be sold. However, the positive feedback I received from friends and followers encouraged me to break free from these insecurities.

Testing the Waters on Instagram

Taking a leap of faith, I shared a video of my creation process with Trevor on my Instagram story. To my surprise, many people expressed their liking for it and even placed requests for their own Trevor. This encouraged me to explore the possibility of turning my hobby into a business.

Receiving Positive Feedback

Although the number of interested individuals was not overwhelming, it was enough to validate my artistic endeavors. As an introvert who barely knew 15 people, the fact that others were interested in my creations was more than I could have ever expected.

Taking the Leap to Open an Etsy Shop

Feeling bored and still being stuck at home, I decided to take action. I documented my process of creating Trevor and other fantasy frog characters, which led me to create an Etsy shop to showcase and sell these unique pieces.

Trevor is more than just a clay creation; he is a representation of my newfound passion and determination. Let me walk you through the process of bringing him to life.

Working with Air Dry Clay

For this project, I chose to work with Amaco air dry clay. Although it was my first time using this medium, I found it to be easy to manipulate and shape. However, one downside was its unpleasant smell, reminiscent of dissecting animals in high school biology.

Sculpting the Body and Head

Using rough shapes, I formed the body and head of the toad. To fuse these pieces together, I employed the slipping and scoring technique. Additionally, I added a collar to the neck to enhance the smoothness of the overall structure.

Creating a Cloak and Robe

To differentiate Trevor as a warlock, I wanted to give him a cloak. Using rectangular pieces of clay, I crafted the cloak and wrapped it around his body, carefully smoothing out any seams. To add texture, I sculpted coil details and carved out a collar using a wet paintbrush.

Adding Unique Details

Every wizard needs a vessel for potions, so I fashioned a cauldron and attached it to Trevor's body. I also sculpted sleeves, hands, a hat, and even a wand for him. With each addition, Trevor began to take on a distinct persona.

Painting and Final Touches

With Trevor's physical form complete, it was time to paint him. Using acrylic paints, I started with a base layer of white to create a clean surface. From there, I applied various colors to bring out the desired themes and accents, such as a galaxy space theme and celestial elements.

Building the Fantasy Frog Squad

Trevor was only the beginning of my fantasy frog collection. Fueled by the positive response I received, I expanded my creations to include different themed characters, each with its own unique attributes.

Showcasing the Collection on Etsy

After the completion of each artwork, I eagerly listed them on my Etsy shop. The process of opening the shop and sharing it on social media was exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. But the support and interest I received made it all worthwhile.
