Module 2: Getting Your Etsy Listings Over to Shopify
In this module, we will focus on the process of transferring your Etsy listings to your Shopify store. This is a crucial step in building your Shopify presence while still leveraging the traffic from your Etsy shop. We will discuss the different integration options available, including importing products and updating product details. Additionally, we will explore how to set up collections in Shopify and connect to the Printify platform.
When it comes to migrating your Etsy listings, there are several options to consider. One option is to publish your listings directly from Printify. While this is possible, it may be challenging if you have a large number of listings as it requires extensive editing due to the loss of formatting during the copying process. Another option is to use a CSV import from Etsy, which allows you to download your listings and upload them to Shopify using an app or directly. However, this method can sometimes lead to import errors and is not ideal for a seamless transfer.
One popular option among Etsy sellers is to use apps within Shopify that facilitate the import and sync process. Two highly recommended apps for this purpose are the Etsy integration and sync app and the shuttle app. These apps come with free trials and offer various pricing options based on the volume of listings you plan to bring over. However, it's important to note that some sellers choose to sync their orders between platforms, but this module primarily focuses on migrating products, not syncing orders.
Based on personal experience and recommendation, we suggest using the Vel app for migrating your Etsy listings to Shopify. This app not only allows you to manage your Etsy and Shopify profiles separately but also offers an easy-to-use bulk publish feature. With Vel, you can copy listings between shops effortlessly and maintain a clean record in both systems. Furthermore, the app recently introduced new AI and Studio functions to simplify listing editing. Although there is a monthly cost associated with using Vel, it provides a comprehensive set of features that justify the investment.
To begin the migration process with Vel, create an account and add your Etsy shop to sync everything to Vel. Next, connect your Shopify account and install the app from the Shopify App Store. Once connected, select the listings you want to copy over to Shopify and choose your Shopify store from the copy dropdown. Although we won't be publishing the listings during this module, the copy function ensures the SKUs and products are connected.
After copying the listings to your Shopify store, you can review and edit them within the copy folder in Vel. It's recommended to take advantage of Vel's bulk editing capabilities to make necessary changes, such as shortening titles for better website SEO and replacing any Etsy references with relevant terms. Once you've made the desired edits, use the bulk publish feature to transfer the listings to Shopify. You can then access your Shopify store and view the imported products with updated titles, descriptions, and variations.
Now that your Etsy listings are successfully imported into your Shopify store, it's time to focus on organizing them into collections. Shopify collections serve as product buckets or categories that allow customers to navigate and find specific types of products easily. You can create collections based on product types, aesthetics, themes, or even breed types, depending on your business and target audience. Additionally, you can choose between manual and automated collections, where manual collections require you to select and add products individually, while automated collections use tags to automatically sort products.
Creating collections in Shopify not only helps with product organization but also aids in navigation and website design. Customers can browse collections based on their preferences, streamlining the shopping experience. To create collections, navigate to the collections section in Shopify and either opt for manual or automated collections. For manual collections, you can manually assign products to the collection, while automated collections rely on tags to populate the collection based on specific criteria. Adding images to collections can enhance the visual appeal and provide a preview of the products within each category.
Once you have created your collections, you can conveniently assign products to them in bulk using Vel or Shopify's product page. By selecting products and adding the respective tags, you can ensure that products are correctly organized within the collections. This step is crucial for maintaining a well-structured website and improving the customer browsing experience. Don't hesitate to experiment with different collections and tags, making adjustments as needed to optimize your product organization.
With your products migrated to Shopify and organized into collections, you now have a solid foundation for building your Shopify store. In the next module, we will guide you through the process of setting up your Shopify website, ensuring a seamless transition from Etsy while leveraging the unique features Shopify has to offer. Stay tuned for an exciting exploration of web design, functionality, and optimization.
